If the waitress spills wine all over you, should you get a discount? Or a free beer/cocktail? An apology is nice, but I was wet, smelly & uncomfortable for the evening.

Just watched the final of the apprentice and was interested to see that the humble teachable won the day. Neither candidate was perfect, but imperfections could be excused.

Anand Patel of Oh Calcutta Restaurant Auckland - search Google for "Best Indian Restaurant" - he sometimes gives a bottle of wine to guests, and they may not have spent as much as the bottle is worth.

While customers can be whingers and continually ask for deals and extras, politeness and fairness and going the extra mile is certainly the hallmark of good customer relations. I always get a free beer when I visit Oh Calcutta.

So how much more so should a restaurant go when there has been such an obvious mistake as spilt wine. We all acknowledge mistakes, but few of us forgive when there little acknowledgement of fault.

What better a review this would have been if you mentioned the spilt wine, but said your table had a free bottle, and the offer of drycleaning. We would all be wanting to go and enjoy the restaurants hospitality and they would get a name for themselves worth far more than your cost.

one of the best meals i have ever had in italian cusine my whole life. from the freindly staff to the wram and beautiful owners who make u feel like your at home, the calamari and brushcetta by far the BEST in sydney and the osso bucco tender, melts in your mouth. and the italian music all night one of the best nights out...

It can always happen, human error is one thing I will always accept, I dont like the thought of machine error if that was to be our waitress of the future, however, I agree a little more than an appology and or even an overreaction in your favour to the seriousness of the incident goes a long way in retaining future custom. If it has been an inconvenience to you, it needs to be a bigger inconvenience to the restaurant.
