| | | A cautionary wedding tale
My brother-in-law and his fiancé came to Sydney, from Ireland, to get married; after a beautiful ceremony in the Botanical Gardens we (my partner and I, bride and groom and two of their best friends - also over from Ireland) went to the Harbourkitchen restaurant in the Park Hyatt Hotel, down in the Rocks. After ordering food and receiving our drinks order we were all asked for identification (I’m 30, my partner 33!). Unsurprisingly, the bride, groom and bridesmaid (all aged 23) had not thought to bring their passport to the wedding and so were unable to present the required proof. The restaurant, despite much pleading and a reminder that it was a wedding celebration (hence they had to be 18!), refused to serve them any more alcohol.
The bride rang the concierge of the hotel they were staying at (Sydney Boulevard), and asked him to go to their room, open the room safe and fax their passports to the restaurant. The faxes arrived with the most important digit - which part of 1980 they were born in - obscured. Sticking to her guns the restaurant manager rang the concierge and asked him to give her the information again, over the phone. By the time the situation was resolved we were half way through our main course, feeling very unwelcome and angry; the wonderful day ruined, we declined to order any more drinks, and left without having desserts or coffee.
After shelling out close to $500 we all left feeling deflated, disappointed and at a loss to understand the dogged determination of the manager. Had we unwittingly offended someone in the restaurant? Were we the wrong 'sort' for this classy Sydney restaurant? Does the Harbourkitchen have a reputation for underage drinking? It is certainly not the cheapest place to indulge.
Bride and groom return to Ireland on Wednesday, after a mostly wonderful time travelling in beautiful Australia, but I wish we could have given them a better wedding dinner. I think this kind of behaviour from a Sydney restaurant is unacceptable, even more so when they knew they were ruining the most important day in the lives of two young overseas guests.

Just moved to sydney from the uk with a friend of mine, we had been so hectic and stressed we thought we would treat ourselfs to a "nice dinner" we are two 24 year proffesional women and I have been to many nice restaurants far flashier than this place and was shocked at the way a female member of staff was talking to us like we shouldnt be in there, we were dressed quite casual ( my friend who i was with is a stylist for MTV) and i felt like we were not welcome, our food was cold, we found two hairs in two different orders and also left wihout desert. We refused to pay our bill and were more than happy to explain to her and the rest of the restaurant why? suddenly everyone was looking at their food, any more hairs?! the service was shite and so was the food, i feel terrible for your friends, hope they are enjoying married life and the rest of sydney which is a great place.
